Don’t Watch Pi
December 3rd, 2007 Posted in minute of the day | No Comments »I decided to watch the movie Pi last night, because everything I read online said it was really good. Turns out everything I read online was wrong. It was terrible. A lot of people like really budget movies because they are artsy or real or whatever. I don’t think I agree. In any case, my minute of the day yesterday was when Pi ended.
Magic 110, Sonics 94

There actually are some Sonics fans! Kinney managed some Sonics tickets last night, a chance to see one of the NBA’s best teams (Orlando) beat up on Seattle, one of the league’s worst. Down 16 points at one point, and 13 in the final quarter, it never looked like the Sonics had a chance. But for a minute (the minute of the day), the Supes (as they’re affectionately known) made it interesting. With 5:43 to go and the score 91-84, Kevin Durant hit a driving layup, and a free throw. Despite Dwight Howard’s ensuing NBA Jam-style dunk, when Durant hit two more free throws, Howard was called for a 3 second violation, and Wally Szczerbiak hit a pair of his own foul shots, Key Arena was pretty electric. With 4:35 to go, the score was 93-92.
That was the end of the minute of the day though, and the Magic nailed four straight three pointers to make it a laugher, winning by 16.
In Seattle!
November 27th, 2007 Posted in minute of the day | No Comments »I’ve arrived in Seattle, which I guess is where I live now. Doesn’t feel like it at all, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it quickly. As I start a new chapter here, I’m going to start using this blog for more than just recording trips to far-off lands or sporadically posted photo galleries. My first plan is to record a “Minute of the Day”, recounting the best minute (or two or five, if really necessary) every day that I can. At the very least, it will keep me and anyone reading this in a pretty positive mindset.
Without further ado, the best minute of my first day in Seattle was as my plane descended into Seattle. Despite the typical gray Seattle sky, the view was still spectacular. First, the white-capped Olympic Mountains appeared, followed soon after by Lake Washington and the Puget Sound. Then, we did a fly-by of the city, passing the iconic Space Needle and the skyscrapers of downtown, including the Smith Tower, where I work. It truly was a really great minute, for a couple of reasons. Not only was I reminded of what I liked so much about Seattle in my few visits here (the spectacular scenery and opportunity for doing things outdoors), I was really happy to be able to identify so many different buildings, neighborhoods, and other landmarks in what is now my new home.
